Dimapur custodial death case: 2 police officers suspended

The Dimapur police authorities have suspended two police officers in the alleged custodial death of a Ramesh Kumar Yadav.

The police establishment issued a press release on Saturday offering a list of updates associated with the case. 

“Based on specific information regarding arm/ammunition and drug peddling activities, Lt. Ramesh Kumar Yadav, M/38 yrs (sic) S/o Kedar Yadav of Sandanadpur, Bihar was arrested on the wee hours of the 03.08.2016 from his residence at Naga Colony, Burma Camp, Dimapur,” the police stated.

“The police had recovered from his house - one .22 Pistol; 15 live 7.62mm rounds; 6 live 7.65mm rounds and 100 banned tablets of Nitrozepam. Accordingly, a case was registered in East Police Station for further investigation.”

Based on “his revelation,” the authorities said, two other co-accused individuals were also arrested. “They were identified as Chandan Kumar and Manoj Yadav. They were kept in the custody of the East Police Station. Deceased Ramesh Kumar Yadav was kept separately from the other two in view of safety and security concerns and in the interest of the investigation. At around 0430 hrs, he was found dead. A UD Case in this regard has been registered for investigation,” the police said.

The police said that a ‘magisterial inquest of the deceased’ was conducted. It was “video graphed”; the dead body taken to the District Hospital of Dimapur for Post Mortem, the press release stated.

“The Post Mortem was conducted by the Doctors and, the entire proceedings also video graphed. A report on the matter was also immediately dispatched to the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi (NHRC) and an internal enquiry was also initiated.”

Further, the police stated, pending reports of the magisterial inquiry and ‘other reports,’ and based on the internal inquiry that was conducted, “Two officers of Dimapur police have been placed under suspension with immediate effect for gross negligence and dereliction of duties.”


Actions on others, if any, “is contemplated after further enquiry,” the police added.
