Assam Rifles accused of detaining health worker

Civil society in Zunheboto town have alleged that the 5th Assam rifles have taken into their custody a person said to be a consultant with the district’s National Vector Borne Disease Control Program.

The Zunheboto Town Youth Organization and the Zunheboto units of the Confederation of All Nagaland State Services Employees’ Association and the Tenyimi Union issued a joint statement on Friday, July 10.
  
The three organizations met in an emergency meeting on July 7 during which they vehemently condemned ‘the act of highhandedness of th5 AR under the command of Captain P Chauhan, Town Post Commander, Zunheboto’.

“The 5th AR Zunheboto without any rhyme or reason arrested Mr Mudosayi Hurie, District Consultant, National Vector Borne Disease Control Program, Zunheboto and also the general secretary of Tenyimi Union Zunheboto under broad daylight at SBI Main Branch, Project colony Zunheboto while on his way o deposit cash at the bank,’ the joint statement said.

“On being arrested the victim produced his government employee ID card, also his staff, a malaria inspector intervened and showed them the proof but their request was flatly denied and he was whisked away to the camp along with h is vehicle”.

The three organizations have condemned the Armed Forces (Special powers) Act being enforced in Nagaland. The organizations have asked the 5th Assam Rifles to desist from “such fearless arrest of innocent civilians which may hamper the congenial atmosphere in Zunheboto town due to poor intelligence failure”.
