Mokokchung-Longleng-Mon highway drives down the road to ruin

There is no certainty for the people of Nagaland about who to blame for bringing a multi-crore scam of a road development and the disgraced company, Gayatri Mytas Joint Venture.

The people–who live in the regions that the Changtongya-Longleng and Merangkong-Mon highway passes through–continue to bear the brunt of the corruption and falsity.
The Special Accelerated Road Development Program contract given to the tainted company continues to damage the psyche of the people, particularly of districts such as Longleng.
The difficulties the people from not having proper roads were once again highlighted in a letter from students of the Phom Naga community in Longleng.

The Phom Students Conference (PSC) issued a copy of a letter appealing to Nagaland’s minister of roads to intervene.

The PSC highlighted for the umpteenth time the pathetic conditions of the Changtongya-Longleng-Merangkong-Mon road and on behalf of the public of the Phom community in Longleng district.

“In reference to the subject as stated above, we would like to state that the road construction under Longleng district was taken up by Gayatri Mytas/Ratna JV under National Highway such as Changtongya-Longleng and Merangkong-Mon via Tamlu under SARDP (north east) two-lane which has been abandoned by the company in April, 2012,” the students’ letter began.

The organization stated: “Since then, the condition of the roads are becoming even more pathetic thereby causing inconveniences for vehicles to travel through because of those knee-deep potholes in the whole stretch. The monsoon season is a nightmare for the travellers as the road condition leaves the travellers pushing the vehicles to pass through the heavily soaked muddy road. Sometimes travellers wonder if there are roads that lead to Longleng district and one cannot remember a day of good road since time immemorial”.

The Phom students’ organization has requested Nagaland’s minister for roads to “kindly intervene and initiate immediate necessary action in this regard within one month time for better road connectivity in the interest of the Longleng district”.
