Peren unleashes Diarrhea control as motion begins

Peren district isn’t holding back on diarrhoea (or Diarrhea) and has launched the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight on July 15. The anti-diarrhoea program was launched in the office of the district’s deputy commissioner.

Officials from the establishment of chief medical office, medical superintendent, School Education department and the Public Health Engineering department, besides members of the Zeliangrong Mipui Organization (mothers’ organization) and officials of the administration attended the event.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ngangshimeren gave an introduction to the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight and its significance. He said that although the program will commence only from July 27, the program was launched early ‘so that the committee members can discuss and bring out the agendas in order to disseminate and create intensive awareness’. The health program will continue till the 8th of August.

The program needs a multi sector approach, he said. He urged the other departments especially the administration, Social Welfare, School Education, PHE and local groups such as Zeliangrong Mipui Organization for their support to fight against this disease.

The medical official also highlighted the previous year’s report on the diarrhoea program. 42 accredited social health workers participated in the drive, he said. This year, the work will be on reaching out to all the villages. Oral rehydration solutions and Zinc tablets would be distributed for in the 0-5 age group. They will be distributed for free.

Deputy Commissioner of the district, Peter Lichamo, also addressed the gathering.  He said that that information should be disseminated using the church as a platform. Likewise, “demonstration of hand washing” should be given in all the schools, he said.

The administrator also highlighted about Clean India Campaign saying that when it comes to Diarrhoea control, “cleanliness” was one of the key aspects of making the mission a success. He added that ZMO can play a very important role in motivating and creating awareness among mothers and children.

He also highlighted the importance of IEC materials such as leaflets written in local dialects for the public.

Various aspects about implementing the program were discussed during the meeting. The committee adopted two resolutions namely, to appoint nodal officers from the various departments and organizations for any information and secondly, to move the departments to appoint more accredited social health activists for Peren town.
